on morning shows saying that he is not convinced that rick santorum can defeat mitt romney in a head to head race. politico writing that mitt romney vowing to fight back today. the focus on the romney campaign has been the math. writing from boston saying it would take a dramatic change for mitt romney to lose the nomination for president. that was the argument that romney's high command delivered in a briefing today. this following a ten-state super tuesday contest in which the former massachusetts governor was able to eek out a very narrow victory in ohio. but he lost contests in traditional republican states of tennessee, oklahoma and north dakota to rick santorum. andrea sul a spokesman for the romney campaign announced that the campaign raising about $11.5 million in february. that was the second best fundraising month for the romney campaign. not a lot of appearance today by the candidate as they try to regroup following super tuesday. you heard a moment ago rick santorum on the campaign trail in kansas. mitt romney from boston appearing on cnbc's "squawk box" this morning. >> historic

is how things are shaping up. these are post super tuesday polls. mitt romney is in the lead now in alabama. rick santorum did have a lead in some polls a couple days ago, but romney out in front 31%. rick santorum trailing by 10 points. newt gingrich and ron paul in third and fourth place in those races. and the gingrich campaign has said they are risking everything on those two southern primaries. they have always felt that that sweep through the south should be where newt gingrich would be capable of being strong. a campaign spokesman for mr. gingrich says they are a must-win in alabama and mississippi. he won georgia handily. last night in birmingham gingrich predicted victory. >> when we win this primarily and the primary next door we will have reset this primary race. it's the most amazing thing i have ever seen. >> reporter: gingrich canceled planned events in kansas. he has won fewer total delegates than both mitt romney and rick santorum. so watch that. bill: we have fox news alert. new job numbers in the number of americans filing for first time benefits up to 362,000.

super tuesday here is where the republican presidential race stands. mitt romney won six of the ten states that voted yesterday. rick santorum three, newt gingrich one. so far, 22 states have voted. romney has won 13, santorum 7, gingrich two. it takes 1,144 delegates to clinch the nomination. romney is more than a third of the way there with 391. santorum has 140. gingrich 95, ron paul 38. romney won the key battleground state of ohio last night-- but just barely. john dickerson is our political director. john, where does romney stand today. >> well, scott, ohio was a lot closer than the romney campaign wanted it to be. they'd hoped if they had a commanding victory romney would be able to say that the ration was just all but over. instead, questions were raised again about his inability to connect with the most conservative members of his party. but overall, it was a good night. as you mentioned, six of ten states won by romney, 65% of the delegates at stake last night. in talking to experts today, they say it's nearly impossible for romney's competitors to overtake him in that del

answers to those questions. >>> mitt romney heads into tomorrow's primary with 20 more delegates thanks to a win at puerto rico. the 20 delegates get him closer to the magic number of 1,144 needed to clinch the nomination. he's currently at 519. rival rick santorum obviously is doing everything he can to stop romney from getting there. the former pennsylvania senator asked on cbs about chances the race will end up at a brokered convention and here's what he said about it. >> i think obviously they're increasing with congressman gingrich staying in the race and congressman paul staying in the race. we see in these caucuses that each of them and even some of the primaries, they pull delegates. our delegate calculation has governor romney far below 50%. we think that there's a lot of primaries coming up, including pennsylvania, my home state, where we can make some very big delegates. texas is going to be another great state for us. >> for every candidate, there's a lot of self interest to spin. does he have a point? john and bill burton joins us tonight. good to see all of you. let me sta

. >>> it's now 5:02. the biggest prize of super tuesday goes to mitt romney. this morning nbc declared romney the winner in the ohio primary. it was hardly a landslide. he beat rick santorum by about 12,000 votes. romney won six of the ten states in play yesterday. santorum won three. both candidates, though, celebrated what they call big nights for their campaigns. >> to the millions of americans who look around and can only see jobs they can't get and bills that they can't pay, i have a message. you have not failed. you is a president that's failed you, and that's going to change. [ cheers ] >> we've won races all over this country against the odds, when they thought, okay, he's finally finished. we keep coming back. >> romney won about half of the 419 delegates up for grabs yesterday. he won at least 204 delegates, and that's more than his three competitors combined. rick santorum won at least 77 delegates. newt gingrich won at least 69, and ron paul won at least 16. >>> in battleground virginia, a fairly light turnout this super tuesday. we have a breakdown of the vote in our area.

the support of all presidential candidates, formally ait'sed to by governor romney and he sees the logic in it and we passed this off the floor of the house of representatives. i believe that governor romney would be supportive of such an initiative. if you go on down theline in the platform that are universal among the presidential candidates, you would see the desire to repeal dodd-frank. dodd-frank that is set up such that the government would decide which lending institutions were too big to be allowed to fail. and once declared too big to fail, the three entities in the federal government would decide whether they are going bankrupt and if they went into receivership and which entity would receive them. it is horrible for the federal government to decide winners and losers written by the very people that contributed to the financial problem that we had, chris dodd and barney frank. i'm full for 100% repeal of dodd-frank and if there are redeeming qualities, let's put them back into the law. dodd-frank needs to be repealed and need to pass the repeal of dodd-frank. michelle baum man

's gut check time. who wants it the most? what do you say? >> the most-coveted prize is ohio. mitt romney used his organizational advantage to close the gap with rick santorum. the race here is a dead heat. ram knee is on a bit of a roll with a five-state winning streak. today could be the turning point in this race. momentum takes a back seat to math. going forward it's all about delegates. romney built a comfortable lead. it's impossible to catch up but just to tell them that. >> we'll win it. >> santorum vowed to stay in as a true conservative alternative to romney. >> they know his values aren't the values of the people of the republican party. >> the new poll shows that conservatives might be coming around to romney. 67% say they now have a favorable view of him, up from just 10 days ago. but the longer romney is in a fierce nomination battle the more banged up he gets for the general election. that same poll found among all voters only 35% see romney favorably. >> we have to get on through this process and begin to rebuild. this is probably one of the worst positions winning the nom

primary. rick santorum fired practice shots at a sheriff's shooting range. he leads mitt romney by double digits in recent polls. romney attacked president obama's health care overhaul. newt gingrich and ron paul also campaigned, hoping to keep their chances alive. the chief executive of m.f. global, former senator jon corzine, gave the order to transfer $200 million of clients' money just days before the firm collapsed. that's according to a congressional memo released today by investigators trying to track $1.6 billion of missing customer funds. it included an email sent by a firm executive stating the money transfer was "per j.c.'s instructions" to cover an overdraft. last december, corzine testified before lawmakers that he did not know where any of the money went. on wall street, stocks eked out small gains today. the dow jones industrial average gained more than 34 points to close above 13,080 points. the nasdaq rose more than four points to close at 3,068. for the week, the dow lost more than 1%; the nasdaq rose four tenths of a percent. those are some of the day's major stories. n
